Why no pictures? Why the phonetic key?

T

hose responsible for writing NEWSprint have a broad range of remedial experience with learners ranging from junior level right through to tertiary.
From their vantage point it is clear that the single most common problem encountered amongst students with difficulties at all levels is the lack of decoding skills.
This becomes even more apparent at senior/tertiary level where text-only material is the norm. Here, comprehension of much significant written information is only possible if the written symbols storing that information can be understood.
NEWSprint is designed as a tool to strengthen students
' decoding abilities; to help give them the tools needed to actually read text as opposed to the process of one-on-one "matching" of written word-images with a finite set of pictures stored in their minds.

Where does the Dolch Basic Sight Word  List come from?

E

dward William Dolch, Ph.D. first published his concept of "Basic Sight Words" in his book, "Problems in Reading" in 1948.
In order to be a good reader, Dr Dolch believed that the 50-75% of the words used in everyday reading should be able to be "named on sight" as soon as they are seen. They need to be known (internalised) in such a way that no conscious effort needs to be made in order to quickly identify the word and its meaning.
Critics claim that lists mean a "drill and kill" policy is followed.  Supporters say that it is very easy to have fun with the words through such means as "Bingo", "Snap", "Memory" etc, as well as by other means. Supporters also argue that even if a dry "drill" policy was to be followed children are still advantaged in that they will learn 50-75% of the words used in
everyday reading.

NEWSprint requires a minimum of Version 5. However, if you have an older version, (or even Version 5 itself), we would recommend that you first remove these older versions (How?) before visiting the Adobe website and downloading the latest free version. (Downloading over the top of older versions of Adobe Reader can cause the latest version to malfunction.)

The free Adobe download can be reached from this link.
